Shakespeare Works! was inspired by our live theatre work in schools. Launched to great reviews at the BETT show in London 2006, the programme is now used all over the world to help students understand and enjoy the works of Shakespeare. The follow up films Shakespeare in the Favelas! and Romeo and Juliet Invigorated! cross barriers when it comes to teaching in the classroom and using drama in the most violent areas in the world.

romeo and juliet invigorated dvd

Romeo and Juliet Invigorated!

Developed with Professor Andy Goodwyn to support English teachers when teaching Shakespeare at secondary school (KS3 and 4), the film demonstrates a whole range of active drama techniques that are great fun and highly successful in the English classroom when teaching dramatic texts.

The 90 minute DVD is made for the classroom. It is divided into 12 lessons to help and inspire students to explore the play through performance - to encourage them to have a go themselves at the fun, drama activities.

In the film, theatre and film students from Reading University workshop all the different aspects of the play, key scenes, the language, the plot, the characters, an understanding of Shakespeare's Globe, culminating in their very own 20 minute performance of Romeo and Juliet itself.

Professor Andy Goodwyn is currently the Head of Education at Reading University, Chairman and International Representative for the National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE) in the UK and an active member of the National Council of Teaching English (NCTE) in the USA.

"This film provides an excellent, and very different resource to existing material. It shows young people 'having a go' at enacting Shakespeare in an active and fun way that should encourage school students to enjoy Shakespeare and want to 'have a go' themselves." Professor Andy Goodwyn

shakespeare in the favelas dvd

Shakespeare in the Favelas!

This 45 minute documentary explores the power of drama-in-education and compares the reactions of students from two very different countries. We follow Kieron as he visits Beechen Ciff School in Bath to get students performing their own version of "The Tempest” and then we travel to Brazil and witness Kieron using the same drama activities with young people in the dangerous war-stricken favelas (shantytowns) of Vitoria and Rio de Janeiro.

"Here Kieron puts all his skills to the test. An interesting, thought provoking case study for A-Level students that has great potential in both English and Drama, highlighting how drama crosses social boundaries and how Shakespeare can be authentically celebrated around the world." Professor Andy Goodwyn, Head of the Institute of Education, Reading University.

This story was featured on BBC1 "Points West", premiered to over 100 teachers at the National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE) conference and also headlined the Summer 2008 edition of "Shakespeare Scene" printed by Ashokan International Ltd.
